The Watch

It's well documented by now that early Roger Dubuis pieces are highly regarded amongst collectors for their build, design considerations, and execution. This Hommage H37 is a prime example of this. One of just 28 pieces produced and dating from 1998, it comes directly from the original owner with its most complete set and remained in barely worn condition despite its 26-year age.

Rendered in grey-toned white gold, the appropriately proportioned case is extremely classically designed, with numerous nods to models from Patek Philippe and Longines. Turbine-styled tipped chronograph pushers introduce a touch of flair that closely resembles Patek Philippe's 1463 'Tasti Tondi' case, for example, one of the most revered Patek references. At 37mm, the Hommage is perfectly balanced, not too petite to appear heavily vintage, and not too large to seem clumsy.

The dial of this Hommage is one of its most striking visual features, with a very distinctive two-tone execution blending a silver base with hints of salmon. Sitting just within the pulsation scale is a railroad-style outer second track with a lovely light salmon hue contrasted with black printing. The same salmon tone returns for the registers. This bi-compax chronograph also features a sector design for the markers that draws all of these wonderful aspects together. The hour, minute, and seconds hands are executed in a feuille shape and in silver, while the chronograph hand and elapsed minute hand are thermally blued. It's an incredibly classic affair that still maintains its own personality.

To give further insight, back when this piece was new, it retailed for CHF 24,500, equivalent to $54,000 today.

The Movement

Seen through the display case back of the Hommage 3H7 Chronograph is an absolute gem of a movement: the in-house calibre RD56. Based on the legendary Lemania 2310, this movement features a swan neck regulator, a wishbone-shaped main bridge, and is Geneva Sealed. Simply put this, movement is regarded as one of the most important chronograph movements of the era; unsurprisingly, Patek Philippe also used this movement.

How It Wears

In the horological world, many dress chronographs offer tasteful refinement, and then there is this H37. Its 37mm case width is suitably sized for modern wrists, offering compelling wearability. Nevertheless, there is no avoiding the sensational dial of this H37. It is simply an effortlessly classic piece from a bygone era for a modern manufacturer.

Origin

Roger Dubuis was a Swiss-born specialist watchmaker who spent nine years working at Longines during the 1950s repairing chronographs. He then spent two decades at Patek Philippe working on complicated timepieces. His illustrious career working at two giants of the Swiss watch industry cemented his impact on watchmaking during the 20th century. During the 1990s, Dubuis met with a gentleman called Carlos Dias. Dias was a businessman and a watch designer, suggesting it was only a matter of time before the expertise of both talents were combined to create a watch brand. In 1995, Roger Dubuis, the brand, was launched with two watch models: The Hommage and the Sympathie.

Naturally, these early Roger Dubuis watches were inspired by historical models from les ateliers such as Patek Philippe and Longines, always to pay tribute to their beauty respectfully. Similarities to Patek didn't start and end with their designs, though, as Dubuis' watches also received the Geneva Seal. This became a big focus for the brand with each model produced. In fact, to this day, Roger Dubuis is the only manufacturer who can say 100% of their production watches that have ever left their workshop have received a Geneva Seal.

Over the years, the Hommage was produced in. Despite its name, it is a collection that carries a quantifiable number of unique features that make it more than a direct copy of any Patek or Longines.

Dubuis only made 28 pieces of every model released during the early days. As such, it's extremely rare to come across early pieces available for sale on the open market.
