Laurent Ferrier Classic Origin Green SHH Edition - 1 of 10
It's not every day one decides to start again completely, especially at 63, after nearly four decades at one of the world's most prestigious companies. But that's precisely what Laurent Ferrier did when he founded his eponymous watch brand with his son Christian and friend François Servanin in 2009.
Ferrier's career began at Patek Philippe, where he assisted in the creation of some of the brand's most iconic models, including the Patek Philippe Nautilus. Soon at the helm of the development department, he played an instrumental role in navigating them through the ever-changing landscape of 20th-century watchmaking, ushering in models such as the now-waitlisted Aquanaut and the modernised Calatrava 2000. But despite his success at Patek Philippe, Ferrier knew that building something of his own was his true calling. Therefore, he united forces with his son, Christian, who was occupying a role at Roger Dubuis at the time, and his friend from his endurance racing days during the 1970s, François Servanin, to create a brand that embodied his values of craftsmanship, tradition, and innovation; Laurent Ferrier was born. As the name suggests, the Classic series is classically proportioned with a soft, curvaceous form and a high-polish exterior accentuating its pebble-like design. Since its inception, the Classic series has become a mainstay of the brand's lineup with its 19th-century pocket watch-esque DNA. Despite leaning more towards the unassuming, the Classic series is instantly recognisable, with tradition deeply rooted at its core.
Multi-national markets have played a tremendous role in the success of independent watchmakers, and when it comes to celebrating their creativity and prowess, few retailers have been as enthused as Sincere Fine Watches of Singapore. From being an early champion of now internationally renowned brands before founding Sincere Haute Horlogerie (a dedicated arm centred around independent watchmaking), it's a retailer of significant importance. Launched in 2022, this Laurent Ferrier Classic Origin Green SHH Edition represents one of just ten pieces produced in collaboration with SHH of Singapore and fuses dynamic contemporary concepts with quintessential classic watchmaking via its opaline dial paired with steel construction.
The Classic case of this piece is fluid, smooth and effortlessly elegant. Measuring 40mm in width with a steel case. It is the with Laurent Ferrier displaying its adherence to refinement with a polished finish throughout its pebble-shaped exterior. The Classic has a succinct and explicit identity, much-needed traits when fitted with a punchy and distinctive dial as characterful as this. Carrying a fumé style graduated effect, the Classic Origin Green SHH Edition dial shifts from a centralised mint green hue to a more contrasted sage green around the outer. It's a striking colour that isn't often seen on watches, regardless of the widespread popularity of green itself. It has a light and calming persona, and we have the fusion of its refreshing dial within its smooth, steel case . However, it's not exclusively the colour of the dial that makes this Laurent Ferrier so charming, but its accompanying adornments. Arguably one of the most impactful is its crosshair motif which slices throughout the dial, only pausing for the 'Laurent Ferrier Geneve' signature before encountering 18k white gold drop-shaped hour markers. Alongside these markers are the signature Ferrier Assegai-shaped handset, reminiscent of styles from traditional watchmaking. With a sunken subsidiary seconds register at six, the remaining noteworthy dial elements are unassuming yet immensely impactful. It starts with its railroad track, a feature seen on many extremely classical and timeless vintage watches that conveys a sense of cohesion and singularity in design, and here it's shown in a soft grey tone. It's a suitable format aligning wonderfully with the rest of the dial elements, as does the final dial element of note, the hour numerals nestled within the railroad track, shown in a contrasting yet still relevant forest green colour.
The beating heart of this Laurent Ferrier Classic Origin Green SHH Edition is the Laurent Ferrier LF116.01 Calibre. Manually wound, this movement carries a power reserve of 80 hours, and despite its reserved appearance at a glance, it is truly a nuanced delight to behold. The calibre is adjusted to six positions, has a free-sprung balance and Breguet overcoil, and is complete with a frosted finish to its large bridges. Contrasted by polished chamfers that stretch to its countersinks for jewels and screws, along with black polishing, the finish and allure of this calibre is immaculate. Once again, another aspect of this Laurent Ferrier that reflects the modernity of this piece is the medium grey tone achieved by its ruthenium plating. When directly compared to the silvery rhodium plating as seen on most Laurent Ferrier calibres, this appearance is both striking and wonderfully paired with the overall timepiece.
