The Watch

If one were to hypothetically task a younger watch brand to redefine what classic watches were understood to be, Laurent Ferrier would be perfectly suited for the role. Just take a look at their lineup, and you'll find a mix of models ranging from bonafide well-known configurations to novel takes that maintain a sense of elegance. What we're dealing with here is a remarkable case of the former, the Classic Micro-Rotor Autumn, a model name that speaks for itself. Encased in the Laurent Ferrier Classic frame, powered by a micro-rotor and featuring an unmissable copper tone covering for its dial, this realisation is Laurent Ferrier's salmon on steel. The Classic case of this piece is fluid, smooth and effortlessly elegant. Measuring 40mm in width, the perpetually desirable steel case adheres to refinement with a polished finish throughout the uniquely pebble-shaped exterior.

But the start of the show for many is that dial; all it takes is four elements to create this classical beauty. At the centre of this Laurent Ferrier is the autumnal-inspired dial, a salmon-like tone which you won't find as commonly as silver or black, but its expression is surprisingly suitable. Though the pairing with the vertical satin-brushed finish here allows this dial's dynamism to come alive, especially when accented with a radial guilloché for the subsidiary seconds register at six. Although stainless steel forms the piece's exterior, white gold sits underneath the crystal, with Ferrier's signature drop-shaped hour markers and the Assegai-shaped handset supplying a style reminiscent of traditional watchmaking. The final element of note is, in fact, the silver printing for the Laurent Ferrier Geneve signature at twelve, as well as the dot marker minute track around the periphery of the dial. Once again, it's a piece that tastefully conjures up design cues from yesteryear and respectfully hints at Ferrier's career at Patek Philippe.

The Movement 

The beating heart of this Classic Micro-Rotor is the Laurent Ferrier FBN 229.01 Calibre. Powered by, you guessed it, a micro-rotor, this movement carries a power reserve of 72 hours, is adjusted to six positions, includes a Silicon natural escapement with double direct impulse on the balance, and is nothing short of a nuanced delight to behold.

Côtes de Genève striping adorns the two large bridges that are wonderfully contrasted by engine turning on the main plate, with a sea of bevelled wheels, polished screw-heads and elegant anglage. Furthermore, the individual micro-rotor bridge is completely hand polished. If not enamoured by its plentiful collection of exposed jewels, the mechanical charm and remarkable array of fine finishing with the FBN 229.01 calibre is undeniable.

Origin

It's not every day one decides to start again completely – especially at 63 – after nearly four decades at one of the world's most prestigious companies. But that's precisely what Laurent Ferrier did when he founded his eponymous watch brand with his son Christian and friend François Servanin in 2009. 

Ferrier's career began at Patek Philippe, where he assisted in the creation of some of the brand's most iconic models, including the Nautilus. Soon at the helm of the development department, he played an instrumental role in navigating them through the ever-changing landscape of 20th-century watchmaking, ushering in models such as the now-waitlisted Aquanaut and the modernised Calatrava 2000. But despite his success at Patek Philippe, Ferrier knew that building something of his own was his true calling. Therefore, he united forces with his son, Christian – who occupied a role at Roger Dubuis at the time – and his friend from his endurance racing days during the 1970s, François Servanin, to create a brand that embodied his values of craftsmanship, tradition, and innovation; in 2009, Laurent Ferrier was born. As the name suggests, the Classic series is classically proportioned with a soft, curvaceous form and a high-polish exterior accentuating its pebble-like design. Since its inception, the Classic series has become a mainstay of the brand's lineup with its 19th-century pocket watch-esque DNA. Despite leaning more towards the unassuming, the Classic series is instantly recognisable, with tradition deeply rooted at its core.
