Origin

Abraham-Louis Breguet is widely regarded as one of the earliest innovators of the horological world, with a prominent claim to fame being the inventor of the tourbillon during the 18th century. As one of the oldest names in horology, there isn't much Breguet hasn't mastered, from highly complicated timepieces to sporty, rugged tool watches for professional pilots and the French Navy alike. Over its four century-long reign, Breguet has honed the art of timeless watchmaking spanning a plethora of watch styles. At their core, however, they're a watchmaker centred around the preferences of its founder. Exceptionally elegant, deeply traditional, understated refinement, and being nothing short of the benchmark for high-end horology, is perfectly epitomising of Abraham-Louis' vision.

During the last quarter of the 20th century, Breguet joined the likes of Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin when they began looking back to classic watchmaking styling for their new models. In Breguet's case, this meant reverting to its founder's plans for the brand. With Jacques and Pierre Chaumet at the helm, talented watchmaker (previously of Audemars Piguet for seven years) Daniel Roth joined the team to help define and execute the next chapter of Breguet's history.

The fruits of their labour came in the form of many compelling, traditional references, including the 5237 Chronograph. This chronograph has all the hallmarks of an emblematic Abraham-Louis Breguet creation and can be found in yellow, rose, and white gold. The 5237 is a close sibling to the 2mm smaller reference, the 3237. With its slightly larger case, thoroughly traditional styling, and fine finishing, the 5237 is a perennial timepiece truly standing the test of time. Through its honest execution, the 5237 showcases Abraham-Louis' legacy.

The Watch

Released during the noughties, the 5237 is quintessential Breguet wrapped up in a 38mm 18k white gold exterior. This rare example dates from 2005/6 and, like many Breguet references, is remarkably understated in its elegance. Right from the word go, this Breguet undoubtedly embodies Abraham-Louis Breguet's idea with its mid-size case offering pure decadence and sophistication. Straight, soft lugs protrude from the centre of the case's fluted coin edge middle body with immense visual delicacy. This quintessential body of the case contributes vast amounts of character, the start of a reoccurring theme throughout this piece. A smooth, domed bezel gradually draws the eye to the dial of this watch that is simply jam-packed with coherent, captivating details and finishes.

It starts with a 60-minute track, narrow Roman numerals and two gold rounded markers at three and nine sitting on a brushed silver chapter ring. When combined with the centralised guilloché Clous de Paris pattern, it creates an almost matching colour Tuxedo dial like appearance. This concept is repeated throughout the two sub-registers with an alternative, horizontally configured guilloché surrounded by smaller brushed chapter rings once more. As if the dial couldn't be any more alluring, the 5237 is fitted with thermally blued Breguet hands and a long needle style chronograph hand. Completing the dial is the classic Breguet signature at 12 o'clock balanced with the brand's secret signature sitting on either side of the twelve numeral. Balancing out the dial is the watch's individual number 'No XXXX' at six o'clock. Both typefaces are framed to match the curvature of the dial with beautifully bevelled edges gracefully rejoining the chapter ring edge. There are zero points of contention throughout this dial design, something which is a testament to contemporary Breguet, who undoubtedly has conscientiously translated Abraham-Louis Breguet's original vision.

The result is a thoroughly intelligent piece of watch design and a watch that is hugely whimsical in its coherence.

The Movement

Powering this traditional Breguet is the Breguet 533.3 Caliber. Based on the Lemania 2320, which is closely related to the iconic Lemania 2310, this manual wind chronograph movement comes with 24 jewels, a Breguet overcoil hairspring, a swan-neck regulator, and 48 hours of running autonomy. Enjoy the bevels and finishing in all its beauty through the screwed sapphire display caseback fitted to this Breguet Classique Chronograph 5237.

How It Wears

Measuring a remarkably contemporary 38mm in width, the watch is a brilliant Breguet chronograph, perhaps for those who find the 36mm of the 3237 a little undersized. The harmonious relationship between its case and dial counteracted with its straight lug design ensure every desirable feature is emphasised. On the wrist, the piece is incredibly slender, providing an exceptionally luxurious feel—however, thanks to its white gold exterior, its understated in its sophistication. Although chronographs are typically more of a sporty complication, the 5237 Breguet is a stunning example of an elegant dress chronograph, indicating its supreme versatility for formal to smart/casual occasions. By no means large or obtrusive on the wrist, the 38mm 5237 represents a wonderful balance between traditional design elements that are typically Breguet, with slightly enlarged proportions.
