Pascal Coyon Series 2 - Unique piece - Enamel dial with Breguet numerals
Origin
From the Champagne region of France, Pascal Coyon is an independent watchmaker who attended one of France's most prestigious watchmaking schools, Lycée Edgar Faure in Morteau, with alums being some of the best watchmakers hailing from France. However, upon graduating, rather than heading straight to Switzerland, Coyon headed southwest to set up his own workshop in Bayonne, France where he specialised in repairing and restoring clocks and watches. This occupied approximately 15 years of his career before taking the grand and commendable leap towards creating his own brand and watches. His goal was simple: to produce traditionally abiding chronometers with hand finishing at affordable prices.
Coyon is a complete watchmaker, having first conceptualised and created the calibre 1900 in a year and a half. Guided by the appearance of pocket watch calibres, all movement finishing and assembly is completed in his workshop, with the assistance of CNC being used for plates and bridges.
Coyon started production with 60 examples, which swiftly sold out – it took Coyon more than four years to fulfil the production of these pieces. Once complete, Coyon began developing a Series 2, unveiling a prototype watch in 2019. Each completed piece is produced as unique, allowing clients to select the case, dials, and hands. The watches take approximately one month to complete, and each watch undergoes testing at the Besançon Observatory before being united with its owner. For the Series 2, a new movement – Calibre 19 – was designed from the ground up.
The Watch
With the rapid growth of independent watchmakers in recent decades, it's easy to forget how special the opportunity is to own a watch conceived by an immensely talented individual with whom you can shake their hand, ask questions, and understand what it took to make the watch a reality. Pascal Coyon is one of those people, and with an annual production of approximately just ten pieces, it's not every day the opportunity to own one of his creations arises, especially an example of the Series 2 like this piece.
Rendered in 18ct white gold, the beautifully restrained case measures 39.8mm in width and carries a complete polished finish throughout its smooth curves and extremely thin bezel construction. This striking appearance and case are entirely produced by Voutilainen-Cassin, a case specialist who is owned and also used by Kari Voutilainen for his namesake pieces.
One of the many ways Pascal Coyon stands out from other independent watchmakers is how every piece produced is completed as a piece unique, meaning every piece within the Series 2 can look totally different to the next. In the case of this example, a fantastic eggshell cream dial produced from enamel houses oversized Breguet numerals, which are also rendered in 18ct white gold. The dial enamel dial took eight attempts to ensure the correct colour shade was achieved, which was important, not least because of the red printing used throughout the railroad track, brand signature, subsidiary seconds track at six, and the 'FAB EN FRANCE' font at the bottom of the dial. However, one of the lasting impressions of this piece is its handset, a completely bespoke, handmade set of sword hands, complete in a colour-changing brown hue.
The Movement
For the Series 2 of his watch, Coyon produced a new movement designed from the ground up known as Calibre 19. Timing precision meets remarkable finishing, this calibre is visible through and fills the entire display caseback of the watch. With côtes de Genève, bevelling, perlage and mirror polishing, this calibre is the 19B variation which is a white execution. Beating at a leisurely 2.5 Hz, the escapement wheel bridge is made from brass and steel, and the finger-style balance bridge is topped by a regulator index that is black polished, as is the winding click. The calibre has achieved certification from Besançon Astronomical Observatory in France, which put movements through a 16-day testing regime.
How It Wears
At 39.8mm wide with an extremely thin, almost non-existent bezel and an all-polished case, this Series 2 is all-dial and remarkably striking. And that's just how it should be, as the enamel dial and its individual furniture are the stars of the show on the wrist with their thickness and depth.
