The Watch

Well-executed sector dials are rare in today's age of watch design. Their affiliation with the early 20th century more often than not results in any piece with the dial inherently feeling a touch anachronistic. Its form ensures a perpetual connection to its ancestry, and perhaps that's the most charming aspect of its two-tone configuration. It's achingly classic and charmingly elegant, and the Laurent Ferrier Classic Origin for Revolution & The Rake is a shining example. Released in 2020, this one of twelve piece takes a restrained and pure approach to the dial, with carefully considered accents that elevate it above other sectors from the 21st century.

The Classic case is fluid, smooth and effortlessly graceful. Measuring 40mm in width, the stainless case adheres to refinement with a polished finish throughout its pebble-like exterior. Its curvaceous shape carries zero harsh defining edges, is succinct yet impactful on the wrist, and is complete with a historical-style onion crown.

Naturally, the dial is the peak element of this piece as, in a word, it's beautiful. The two-tone format carries a cream-coloured centre surrounded by a printed sector track and sans-serif Arabic numerals for three cardinal points. The chapter ring has the quintessential circular brushing and railway track, as well as a share of the subsidiary seconds. As seen on Patek pocket watches, the chapter ring frames the piece wonderfully, drawing the eye towards the dial's centre and the heat-blued Ferrier's signature Assegai handset.

This Classic Origin for Revolution & The Rake stands as a testament to Ferrier's lifelong penchant for tradition, Revolution & The Rake's expert eye for curation and wisdom, each fused in a piece that respectfully recalls classic Patek Philippe 20th century hallmarks.

The Movement

The beating heart of this Classic Origin is the Laurent Ferrier LF116.01 Calibre. Manually wound, this movement carries a power reserve of 80 hours, and despite its reserved appearance at a glance, it is truly a nuanced joy to behold. The calibre is adjusted to six positions, has a free-sprung balance and Breguet overcoil, and is complete with a yellow gold micro-sandblasted finish. Contrasted by polished chamfers that stretch to its countersinks for jewels and screws, along with black polishing, the finish and allure of this calibre are immaculate. When directly compared to silvery rhodium plating seen on most Laurent Ferrier calibres, this appearance tastefully contrasts the piece while introducing glorious warmth.

How It Wears

This vintage take on the Classic Origin leans into its 20th-century-inspired beauty. The 40mm case size is only bettered by its 10.7mm height, and with its steel exterior offering real-world practicality, it's one of the most wearable creations, ideally suited to formal occasions yet effortless for the everyday. The watch comes with a selection of straps, each enhancing its versatility. The Alcantara strap, with its soft, suede-like texture, offers a luxurious yet understated feel, making it perfect for both office wear and casual outings. The steel beads bracelet provides a more refined, timeless aesthetic, adding an extra touch of elegance and comfort, ideal for more formal settings. Finally, the forest green strap introduces a pop of color while maintaining the watch's classic sensibility, bringing a touch of character to the piece without compromising its sophisticated design. Each strap complements the Classic Origin's vintage-inspired design, ensuring it feels at home in a variety of settings, from business meetings to weekend adventures.

Condition

With only twelve pieces ever produced, the rarity of this modern limited edition is further accentuated by its outstanding condition and complete set of original accessories. Included are the spare luminous hands that were supplied with the watch from new, the signature Laurent Ferrier pin buckle, an unworn leather Alcantara strap, the steel "beads of rice" OEM bracelet, and a Laurent Ferrier Forest green strap. Additionally, the watch comes with its original outer and inner boxes, warranty papers, manual, cleaning cloth, and loupe. The timepiece has recently undergone a full service at Laurent Ferrier, and as a result, it is covered by an extended Laurent Ferrier warranty.

Origin

After spending nearly four decades at Patek Philippe overseeing the development and launch of references such as the Nautilus and the Aquanaut, Laurent Ferrier was anything but new to the game in 2009. At 63, alongside his son Christian and friend François Servanin, Ferrier went solo and realised his eponymous brand with one simple objective: To build a brand that embodies craftsmanship, tradition, and innovation. Today's range is based on three core cases: the Classic, the Square, and the Sport. Since its inception, the Classic series has a 19th-century pocket watch-esque DNA fused with a pebble-like smoothness. Despite leaning more towards the unassuming, the Classic series is instantly recognisable, with tradition deeply rooted at its core. Variations within the collections do occur, but the three pillars shape Laurent Ferrier along with one more influence: Patek Philippe. You see, one cannot spend most of their career at such a prestigious manufacturer and not stay inspired by their principles.

Ferrier's reputation has propelled his brand to the top of independents, garnering respect from passionate collectors and industry leaders. One of these figures is auctioneer and expert Aurel Bacs, who commissioned a piece unique from Ferrier with a sector dial. Once the watch was delivered, many others followed suit. In 2020, Wei Koh of Revolution & The Rake worked with Laurent Ferrier on a limited run of watches to honour the beauty of Bacs' piece. The result was the Classic Origin for Revolution & The Rake, and it was forged from steel. In 2021, two more editions were created with different numerals and new expressive dial colours. Nevertheless, each batch of limited editions remained capped at twelve, making them incredibly desirably and certainly rarely seen available on the open market.
