CARTIER PASHA NIGHT & DAY LTD 20 PIECES
Yellow Gold | Clous de Paris silvered dial

Origin

The story of Cartier started in 1847 in Paris when the luxury Maison was founded by jeweller Louis-Francois Cartier. Over fifty years later, in 1899, he handed the brand over to his three sons who established the company internationally with Cartier becoming a favourite among royalty – named ‘King of Jewellers, Jewellers of Kings’.

It didn’t take long before Cartier turned its eye to watches. Many of the brand’s timepieces have become instant classics, such as the Santos (1904), the Tortue (1912) and the Tank (1919). Though Cartier has produced some fine mechanical wristwatches the Parisian brand was primarily known for its quartz watches in the 1990s. The Collection Privée Cartier Paris (CPCP) with its haute horlogerie mechanical movements and archived based designs had to put Cartier back on the map as a premier Manufacture.

The Cartier Pasha Night & Day has been launched in 1998 in this spirit as part of the much sought-after CPCP-collection in highly limited numbers: only 20 pieces were made in a series of three (yellow, rose and white gold). The Cartier Pasha is without doubt an iconic timepiece illustrating the heritage of the Parisian brand, that used to collaborate with famous independent watchmakers and designers in the late twentieth century, honoring the illuminating tradition as proposed by Louis Cartier, the grandson of the brand’s founder.

In the early eighties Cartier briefed renowned designer Gérald Genta, known for designing the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and the Patek Philippe Nautilus, to design a sports watch for men (watches in the collection at that time were mainly small dress watches). The watch had to be masculine, sportive and water resistant yet carry Cartier’s elegant signature. The Pasha line was an instant success.

In the nineties independent watchmaker Svend Andersen came up with the Day & Night system, inspired by Cartier clocks from the 1930s with a day and night indication, adding to the diversification of the exclusive line.

The Watch

This special edition self-winding Pasha Night & Day, limited to just 20 pieces, measures 38mm with an equally bold and elegant case in yellow gold. It features a 24-hour scale designed over two rows, with one large hand with a sun on the longest side and a moon on the shortest side.

When the sun-hand passes the 18 (6 PM) on the upper scale, the moon-hand starts again at the lower bow, indicating the hours between 18 and 6 (6 PM and 6 AM). The sub dial at six, often used to indicate seconds, displays the minutes, underlining the watch’s distinctiveness.

The hour and minute scales and the applied brand plate reading Cartier Paris are made in 18ct yellow gold, stylishly contrasting the soft silvered dial with Clous de Paris pattern. The hour and minute hands are made from blued steel, matching the cabochon. Cartier’s typical blue sapphire is crafted on a strong and eye-catching crown which is in fact delusional as it is actually a cap protecting the real crown underneath from water.

This stunning timepiece spots the quintessential Vendome lugs designed by Louis Cartier in 1932. Its refined finishing is furthermore enhanced by the incomparable CPCP wallpaper engravings on the caliber, visible through the transparent sapphire back.

The Movement

The Cartier Pasha Night & Day is powered by an automatic, workshop-crafted and hand-assembled, reworked mechanical Frédéric Piguet 15 caliber, also used in other models of the Collection Privée Cartier Paris (CPCP).
