Origin

Despite the name A. Lange & Söhne being around since the 1800s, the brand really came into its own during the 1990s when it was re-established by Walter Lange. With the great-grandson of the original founder at the helm, A. Lange & Söhne released four brand new models in 1994; one of which was the Arkade. This piece stood out from the rest of the inaugural releases as it was the only non-round watch in the collection. Not quite a completely rectangular watch, the Arkade carried a rounded, almost tonneau case shape which is said to be inspired by the arcades in the courtyard of Dresden Castle. Created to appeal to smaller wrist sizes, the Arkade was quietly appreciated in comparison to models such as the Lange 1 and Saxonia which grabbed the headlines and enjoyed the limelight. The model introduced an interpretation of the Germanic design language that Walter Lange was pioneering, something which became a vital blueprint when it came to 1997 and the release of the Cabaret.

Along with the other three Lange models (the Lange 1, Saxonia, and Tourbillon Pour le Mérite) the Arkade helped re-launch the A. Lange & Söhne name whilst simultaneously offering a fresh take on watches designed for smaller, often women’s wrists. With its large double-digit date display, remarkably distinctive case design, compact proportions, and stripped-back dial furniture, the Arkade is one of the most understated Lange models the brand has ever produced.

The Watch

Originally sold in 2000 in Germany, this Arkade is a perfect example of a reference 103.027. Encased completely in 18k white gold, the Arkade’s case remains suitably robust and prominent in its design yet equally poised and undoubtedly refined. Tonneau-like in its shape, the case is best characterised by its blend of straight, vertical sides with its low rounded horizontal top and bottom. Inset from the case body are wide, commanding lugs effectively injecting confident character whilst also highlighting the appealing case shape. Its crown is larger in size than one might expect, however, thanks to its manual wind movement, it is essential that the operation of the piece is as fluid as the model’s design. Housed above the crown is a protruding pusher operated via a tool to jump the date. Measuring 22mm x 29mm the Arkade represents a classically sized example of a dress watch with elegance oozing out of every feature.

The great sense of fluidity and allure is accentuated further when the Arkade’s dial comes into play. This specific reference, the 103.027, carries an almost petrol blue dial to which white gold dial furniture is incorporated. This trackless piece allows for the dial to feel more expansive than its size lets on, something which is mirrored by its raised hour markers. The three, six, and nine markers are presented as petit Roman numerals whereas what remains are applied and diamond in their shape. The Arkade trades a twelve marker for its unmissable double-digit date display which is framed in white gold to match. A brand favourite set of alpha hands portraying the hours and minutes command the centre of the dial with a reduced sized sub-register tracking each passing second thanks to a matching alpha shaped hand.

Understated in its proportions yet unmistakable in its execution, the A. Lange & Söhne Arkade walks the line between remaining dignified, refined, and suitably traditional whilst simultaneously delivering a memorably take on the Lange brand language.

The Movement

Although the Arkade may not be quintessential A. Lange & Söhne as we know it today, the movement is nothing but definitive Lange. Powering the 103.027 is the calibre L911.4. This movement carries all of the hallmarks of an A. Lange & Söhne movement including the highly decorated hand-engraved balance cock, blue screws, curved anglage, and ¾ bridge. Capable of 42 hours of autonomy, this Lange calibre is visible through the sapphire crystal display caseback of the 103.027.

How It Wears

For those who may not be familiar with how rectangular/ tonneau-shaped watches wear on the wrist, the length (or lug to lug measurement) of the watch is arguably more important than the width of the case. There is no denying the Arkade carries a smaller size, however thanks to its stripped-back dial details, powerful lugs, and of course that double-digit date, its presence is certainly felt. With a length of 29mm (39mm from lug to lug), the Arkade remains discreetly proportioned effortlessly matching smart/casual or formal outfits. And then there is the blue dial. Not as serious as a white, silver, or black but not as relaxed as something like a green tone, a blue dial is a brilliantly versatile choice and one that gives this specific Arkade even more personality.

Condition

Presented in new old stock condition, this 103.027 has never been worn as is apparent by its perfect condition as well as the original, unworn blue alligator strap. It is also sold as a complete set including its inner & outer boxes, manual, warranty card, as well as the original Lange pusher. The original White gold buckle is included as well. To preserve the condition of the original strap, this Arkade is fitted with a Mr Watchley leather watch strap.
