Voutilainen 28 Sport - Titanium - One of only 8
The Watch
Referring to the 28Sport as a 'sports' watch requires slightly adapting one's perception of what it means to be a sports watch. Within the context of other manufacturers who favour integrated bracelets, water resistance, and a dynamic appearance, this Voutilainen doesn't compare – however, within the superlative world of Kari, fundamental sportier cues exist.
And those cues begin right from the exterior, with a newly designed case featuring a more angular take on teardrop lugs and a grade 5 titanium rendering complete with a high polished mid-case, bezel, and lugs. One of only eight examples produced, this 39mm reference's aggressive presence is truly felt throughout the dial as here is where the sports designation comes into its own.
The dial of this 28Sport is a tale of two principles, the first of which is the conventional Voutilainen language that makes his creations outstanding. Produced in-house from silver, sitting in from the railroad track is an engine-turned guilloché dial with orange indexes. Sitting centrally to the dial is a 'Voutilainen' signed piece of onyx, which is highly polished and finished by hand with a matching subsidiary seconds register at six. A brand's classic pomme style hands are manufactured from white gold, and it's here where the first signs of its more sporty leaning DNA are apparent, as Superluminova occupies the pointed tips and body of these classic hands. This application can be found elsewhere on the watch, including the surrounds for the indexes and ring around the onyx centre. Once the lights turn off, the impact of this lume application is remarkable. As if this wasn't enough uniqueness, the dial has a sandwich construction, meaning it has a multi-layered depth to go with its visually striking appearance.
The Movement
As is the case with watches by independent watchmakers, the calibre underneath the dial deserves just as much attention as the watch itself. Visible through the display caseback is the manufacture Vingt-8 calibre that is designed, produced, finished, and assembled under Voutilainen roofs. Made from both German silver and titanium, this calibre features Côtes de Genève and perlage finishing bridges and plates, with gracious anglage and a large balance (touching 14mm), with Breguet/Grossmann balance beating at 18,000 vibrations per hour with a power reserve of 65 hours. Whether it's the range of depth, sophisticated balance bridge or the fact this piece features two escapement wheels leading in less energy consumption and less wear and tear, this calibre is a celebration of classic craftsmanship while maintaining alertness to permanence and accuracy.
How It Wears
We've said before how independent watchmakers craft watches that often feel almost unexplainable on the wrist. With such consideration poured into every detail, they offer a wearing experience unlike any other. Voutilainen's creations fall perfectly within this category, and with its unique distinction, the 28Sport is an exemplary instance of this. Measuring 39mm in titanium and its incredibly special dial, the 28Sport is a true masterpiece. Every element of its form and design feels interpersonally connected, providing an unparalleled level of cohesiveness, making every moment the piece is on the wrist a real occasion.

Origin
Kari Voutilainen has always been one to break the mould. Finnish-born, with no prior lineage of watchmaking to his name, Voutilainen grew from his Lapland-based origins to become perhaps one of the most significant present-day independent watchmakers, not that his unassuming nature would suggest. Instead, he's a humble craftsman who's risen to the top, becoming immensely well-respected by supporters of his brand and peers throughout the industry.
After attending a watchmaking school in Espoo, Finland, Voutilainen pursued advanced training in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, under a complication program at WOSTEP. To afford the course, he worked as a restorer in Helsinki. In 1989, after completing the program, he was introduced to renowned watchmaker Charles Meylan while working at Parmigiani's restoration workshop. Meylan became a mentor, inspiring Voutilainen to consider establishing his brand. In the 1990s, Voutilainen dedicated his time to developing a one-minute twin barrel tourbillon, laying the foundation for his venture. Encouraged by Philippe Dufour, he founded Voutilainen Watches in 2002. His collaborations with MB&F, Zenith, Phillips, and Schwarz Etienne have cemented his reputation as a master watchmaker known for his mysterious and brilliant craftsmanship.
From his atelier perched on the edge of a cliff overlooking Fleurier, Switzerland, Kari Voutilainen crafts between 50-100 watches annually. Each piece is a testament to his unique approach to watchmaking, with certain hallmarks permeating throughout the production. However, the idea of a clearly defined catalogue doesn't exist in Voutilainen's world. Instead, he delivers models produced in extremely low numbers or piece unique creations. As a vertically integrated manufacturer, Voutilainen sits at the high end of watchmaking, providing true artistry in technique and expertise with unparalleled bespoke proficiency. For many, his watches reflect their elevated artisanal craft, perched high above the other watchmakers below.
With an annual production output of only 50-100 watches, each Voutilainen creation is a rare gem. The scarcity and individuality of his watches are further heightened when one of his creations becomes available on the open market, making it a highly coveted item for watch enthusiasts and collectors.
