Rolex Datejust Yellow gold 1601 - Full set from 1968

Since 1945, The Rolex Datejust has been the most Rolex of Rolexes. Beloved by generals, presidents, and prime ministers. The stainless steel variants, such as the Reference 1601 dating from the 1960s to 1970s, are perennial favourite of collectors, able to be worn in any environment with just a change of clothes.

Although the 1601 is mostly seen in steel, Rolex has always offered the 1601 in yellow gold as well.

Dating from 1968, this 18kt yellow gold 1601 features an original, elegant blue pie-pan dial which sets off the applied gold stick markers to perfection. Pie Pan dials are dials with an angled outer ring, it resembles an inverted pie pan. This design was popular in the 60s and 70s. It gives the dial more depth and is pleasing to the eye.

The original President bracelet is in absolute mint condition, no stretch or wear. 

Not only is this 1601 a rare specimen, it also comes with its original box and papers. The papers are signed by "Fred joaillier- Rue Royale 6 - Paris ".

Fred Joaillier is a French jewellery brand named after the founder Fred Samuel. Its first store opened in Paris, Rue Royale 6 in 1936 and became famous for jewels designed by Jean Cocteau and for its famous client such as Marlène Dietrich or Grace Kelly. During World War II, Fred Samuel fled Paris and became an interpreter for the Allies. The name Fred, after being imposed by German occupiers instead of 'Fred Samuel' because of the Jewish origins of its founder, was adopted by the brand after the war. Although "Fred" was famous for its colour stones and jewellery, they also sold "fine timepiece" such as Rolex in the 60's and 70's. In 1996, the company than became property of LVMH and still is today.
