Patek Philippe Ellipse 3730 - White gold - Onyx dial
Origin
Few watches are as closely associated with Patek Philippe's design language of the 1970s as the Golden Ellipse. Introduced in 1968, the Ellipse represented a departure from traditional round dress watches, embracing proportions derived from the Golden Ratio. The result was a watch that felt both contemporary and timeless, quickly becoming one of the most successful and recognisable collections in Patek Philippe's history.
Among the many references produced throughout the Golden Ellipse lineage, the reference 3730 occupies a particularly interesting position. Produced during the late 1970s and 1980s, the 3730 retained the elegant proportions that defined the collection whilst introducing the manually wound calibre 215, one of Patek Philippe's most respected in-house hand-wound movements. The reference is perhaps best known for its striking black onyx dial configuration, a combination that distilled the Ellipse concept to its purest form. With no hour markers and almost no visual distractions, the glossy black onyx surface creates a dramatic contrast against the precious metal case, allowing the watch's proportions and simplicity to take centre stage.
Whilst collectors are familiar with yellow gold examples of the reference 3730, white gold examples have remained virtually unknown. A small number of white gold reference 3630s have surfaced over the years, making them highly sought after amongst dedicated Ellipse collectors. However, until now, no publicly documented white gold reference 3730 fitted with an onyx dial has appeared on the market.
The Watch
This particular reference 3730 represents a remarkable discovery within the world of vintage Patek Philippe. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first publicly documented white gold reference 3730 fitted with an original black onyx dial to be offered for sale. Fresh to the market and previously unknown to the collecting community, it combines one of the most desirable dial configurations found within the Golden Ellipse family with a metal rarely, if ever, encountered on this reference.
The watch has been preserved in exceptionally honest condition throughout its life. The case remains entirely unpolished, retaining the sharp lines, crisp edges and original geometry that are so often lost on vintage dress watches. The hallmarks remain deep and clearly visible, whilst the finishing throughout the case displays the character and definition expected from a watch that has escaped decades of excessive intervention.
The black onyx dial is every bit as captivating as one would hope. Free from hour markers and unnecessary embellishment, it presents as a deep, uninterrupted surface that changes character with the light. Combined with the cool tone of the white gold case, the result is a far more discreet and contemporary aesthetic than its yellow gold counterparts. The matching onyx-set crown further enhances the monochromatic appearance and completes one of the most elegant executions of the Golden Ellipse design ever produced.
At approximately 31mm by 38mm, the watch wears considerably larger than its dimensions suggest. Like many Golden Ellipse references, the elongated case shape creates a greater visual presence on the wrist whilst maintaining the refinement expected of a true dress watch.
Rarity & Collectability
Rarity within the Golden Ellipse family is often found not through production numbers alone, but through unusual combinations of metal, dial and condition. The reference 3730 is already an uncommon watch, particularly when preserved with its original onyx dial, matching onyx crown and a white gold case.
What elevates this example into another category entirely is its configuration. Whilst a handful of white gold reference 3630 examples have become known amongst specialist collectors, we are unaware of another publicly documented white gold reference 3730 fitted with an onyx dial. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first example to surface on the open market.
For the seasoned Patek Philippe collector, this creates an intriguing proposition. It combines the rarity associated with white gold Ellipses, the desirability of the onyx dial configuration and the later in-house calibre 215 movement, all within a watch preserved in exceptionally original condition and accompanied by its accessories.
The Movement
Powering the reference 3730 is the manually wound calibre 215, one of Patek Philippe's most celebrated hand-wound movements. Introduced as the successor to earlier calibres, the 215 became a cornerstone of the manufacture's dress watch production thanks to its reliability, elegant proportions and exceptional finishing.
The calibre features Geneva striping, beautifully finished bridges and the level of attention to detail that has long defined Patek Philippe's movement architecture. Its slim profile allows the Golden Ellipse case to maintain its elegant proportions whilst delivering dependable daily performance.
How It Wears
On the wrist, the reference 3730 delivers exactly what the Golden Ellipse was designed to achieve. The elongated case profile creates a larger visual footprint than the measurements suggest, whilst the slim construction allows the watch to disappear effortlessly beneath a cuff.
The combination of white gold and black onyx gives the watch a remarkably modern character. Where yellow gold examples project warmth and vintage charm, this configuration feels understated, architectural and quietly confident. It is a watch that reveals its significance only to those who know exactly what they are looking at.
Condition
The condition of this reference 3730 is great. The watch remains entirely unpolished, with crisp case lines, strong hallmarks and beautifully preserved finishing throughout. The black onyx dial is exceptionally well preserved and remains free from the damage or imperfections often encountered on hardstone dials.
The watch is accompanied by its original Patek Philippe presentation box, Extract from the Archives and original white gold Golden Ellipse buckle. Fresh to the market and preserved in highly original condition, it represents an opportunity to acquire what is, to the best of our knowledge, the first publicly documented white gold onyx-dial reference 3730 to surface.
