Few watches have done more to define the language of the traditional dress watch than the Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 96. Introduced in 1932 at a pivotal moment in the history of Patek Philippe, the 96 was conceived as a watch of restraint. Its design was stripped back, harmonious, and remarkably pure, creating a formula that would go on to influence generations of dress watches that followed.
The reference was born during a period of significant change for Patek Philippe. The Stern brothers had recently acquired the company and, alongside safeguarding the manufacture's reputation for complicated watches, recognised the importance of creating a collection of elegant, more accessible timepieces. The answer was the Calatrava. Its circular case, flat bezel, integrated lugs and clean dial established a design language that has remained central to Patek Philippe's identity ever since.
Over the approximately four decades in which the reference 96 was produced, Patek Philippe created the model in a remarkable variety of configurations. While gold examples form the majority of surviving pieces, stainless steel examples were produced in considerably smaller numbers. Within these already uncommon steel watches, unusual dial executions can make certain examples exceptionally desirable to collectors.
The reference 96 therefore occupies a particularly important position within Patek Philippe's history. It is not simply an early Calatrava; it is the watch that established the fundamental proportions and visual language upon which much of Patek Philippe's subsequent dress-watch catalogue was built.
The Watch
Produced during the early years of the reference 96, this Patek Philippe is an exceptionally attractive and highly unusual example, distinguished by the combination of a stainless-steel case, salmon-coloured dial and rose-gold dial furniture.
At 31mm in diameter, the proportions remain quintessentially Calatrava. The case follows the unmistakable architecture of the reference, with its flat bezel, rounded caseback and characteristically broad, sharply defined lugs. What makes this particular example especially compelling today is the condition of those externals. The case remains remarkably sharp for its age, retaining strong edges, clearly defined lug profiles and the original character of the three-part case construction. Rather than appearing excessively polished over its lifetime, it presents with the kind of crispness increasingly difficult to find on watches approaching a century in age.
The combination of stainless steel and the dial is where this 96 really begins to separate itself from the more conventional examples. Instead of the typical silver, cream or gilt executions encountered on many reference 96s, this watch is fitted with an exceptionally appealing salmon-coloured dial.
The warm tone of the dial creates a striking contrast against the cool stainless-steel case, while the applied rose-gold indexes and matching rose-gold hands bring an additional layer of warmth and sophistication to the composition. The result is an unusually harmonious combination of materials and colours, giving this otherwise restrained Calatrava a considerably more distinctive personality.
The dial itself is not original to the watch. It was replaced at some point during the watch's life, most likely as part of a Patek Philippe service. While the exact circumstances of the replacement cannot be conclusively established, the fact that Patek Philippe has subsequently issued an extract from its archives confirming the watch's identifying numbers provides important provenance for the piece.
The Movement
Powering this Calatrava is Patek Philippe's calibre 12-120, one of the manufacture's most important early wristwatch movements.
The 12-120 represents the traditional approach to movement construction for which Patek Philippe became renowned, combining compact dimensions with an exceptionally high standard of finishing. The movement features beautifully shaped bridges, refined anglage, Geneva striping and the characteristic regulator arrangement associated with Patek Philippe's hand-wound calibres of the period.
Despite its relatively simple function, the 12-120 demonstrates the philosophy that has always separated Patek Philippe's watches from ordinary time-only pieces. Nothing is excessive, yet every component is considered, finished and positioned with purpose.
How It Wears
At 31mm, this Calatrava sits firmly within the traditional proportions of a mid-century dress watch. On paper the dimensions may appear modest by modern standards, but on the wrist the strong lugs and beautifully defined case give the watch considerably more presence than its diameter suggests.
The stainless-steel case also changes the character of the watch. Rather than the conventional formality associated with a gold Calatrava, the steel exterior gives the piece a more understated and versatile character, while the salmon dial and rose-gold furniture provide just enough warmth and personality.
Adding considerably to its period appeal, the watch is fitted to a Gay Frères rivet expandable steel bracelet. The bracelet is particularly well suited to the character of the watch, giving the traditionally proportioned Calatrava a slightly more utilitarian and distinctly mid-century feel. The expandable construction also allows the bracelet to sit comfortably on the wrist while retaining the visual language of the era.
Condition & set
This Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 96 presents in exceptional condition for its age. The stainless-steel case remains remarkably sharp, with strong lug definition and crisp case architecture throughout. It shows no obvious signs of excessive polishing and retains an unusually honest and well-preserved appearance.
The watch is accompanied by its original Patek Philippe presentation box and an Extract from the Archives. It is fitted with a Gay Frères rivet expandable steel bracelet, adding a particularly distinctive touch to the watch.
The set is further completed by an original Patek Philippe alligator strap, preserved in like-new condition, together with the original period-correct Patek Philippe steel pin buckle.
