Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Art Deco - Salmon guilloché dial
The Watch
Few watches lend themselves so naturally to artistic expression as the Reverso, and in the Reverso Art Deco, that expression is taken to its most indulgent extreme. Crafted in white gold, this example immediately steps into the divinely luxurious spirit of the Art Deco era—an era defined by bold geometry, lavish materials, and unapologetic ornamentation.
Produced between 1992 and 2002 in a strictly limited run of just 200 pieces in white gold (alongside 900 in rose gold), the reference Q2773460 represents one of the more exclusive interpretations of the model. Housed in the Grand Taille case—first introduced for the 60th anniversary of the Reverso in 1991—it measures 26.1mm by 42.2mm with a height of 9.7mm, offering a proportion that is both classical and assertive.
The white gold case frames a dial of pastel salmon hue, a tone that feels both delicate and quietly striking. This softness is contrasted by applied white gold dagger indexes and dauphine hands, bringing a sharp, architectural edge that is unmistakably Art Deco. The interplay between line and curve is central to the design: angular markers meet flowing guilloché, while the rectangular form of the case is softened by gently curved lugs and subtly vaulted sides.
At the centre, a rich rosette guilloché pattern provides depth and movement, while the small seconds register at six o’clock is finished in écaille de poisson guilloché. An etched minute track frames the composition, with the remaining dial surface rendered in a vertical satin finish. Signed with raised cartouches for ‘Jaeger-LeCoultre’ and ‘Reverso’, and completed by an applied logo at twelve, the dial is meticulously layered without ever feeling excessive.
Yet, as compelling as the dial may be, it serves merely as an introduction to what lies beneath. Turn the case, and the watch reveals its true theatre.
The Movement
It is not often that a movement demands to be described in purely emotional terms, yet the calibre 822AD earns precisely that response. A derivative of the calibre 822, this is the first Reverso to feature an engraved, skeletonised movement—one that fully embraces the exuberance of the Art Deco movement.
Rose-gold plated and entirely hand-engraved, the bridges sweep across the movement in fluid, organic forms, revealing the intricate mechanics beneath. Brass and steel components interplay with fired blue screws and vibrant ruby jewels, creating a composition that is as rich in colour as it is in texture. Every surface is considered, every space filled, echoing the densely decorative metalwork of the 1920s.
The result is less a movement in the traditional sense and more a piece of miniature sculpture—an object of fascination that rewards prolonged attention. Beneath its artistry, it remains entirely functional, offering 21 jewels, a frequency of 21,600 vph, and a power reserve of approximately 45 hours.
How It Wears
With its Grand Taille proportions, the Reverso Art Deco carries a confident presence on the wrist. Its rectangular form gives it visual substance, yet the refined execution and soft tonal palette ensure it never feels overbearing.
There is a duality to the wearing experience. On one side, a composed and elegant dress watch; on the other, an explosion of artistic expression. This contrast lends the piece a unique lightness—despite its visual complexity, it remains effortless to wear and endlessly engaging.
It is a watch that invites interaction, not only to read the time, but to experience it.
Condition & Set
This example is presented in superb overall condition, showing only minimal signs of wear. It is accompanied by its original white gold deployant clasp, completing a fittingly refined offering.
Origin
The Reverso is, at its core, a product of both necessity and imagination. Conceived in 1931 in response to a request from British officers in India for a watch that could withstand the rigours of polo, its reversible case was a practical innovation. Yet, in solving that problem, something far greater was created.
The design, developed by René-Alfred Chauvot, embraced the defining elements of the Art Deco movement—clean geometry, balanced proportions, and subtle curvature. It arrived at a moment when decoration and function still existed in harmony, just before modernism would begin to strip design back to its bare essentials.
The Reverso Art Deco revisits that moment, but through a more expressive lens. Where the original balanced restraint and utility, this interpretation leans fully into the opulence and artistry of the era’s early years—when craftsmanship was celebrated, and decoration knew few limits.
In doing so, it elevates an already iconic design into something altogether more evocative. Not merely a Reverso, but perhaps one of its most complete and compelling expressions.
