Glashütte Original PanoMaticLunar Salmon Opaline - LTD 50 pcs
Origin
When it comes to melting pots of horology, the small mountainous town of Glashutte is arguably the epicentre of German watchmaking. Situated close to the Czech Republic border, the quaint, picturesque village is cocooned by lush mountains and is the birthplace of many top German watchmakers, including Glashütte Original. As its name rather clearly states, this Glashütte based brand has been producing mechanical watches since 1845 and was established by Ferdinand Adolph Lange. That name may sound familiar, as he is highly regarded as the pioneer of German watchmaking, most notably A Lange & Söhne and Glashütte Original.
The watches produced in Glashütte gained such popularity and a positive reputation that other watchmakers began copying elements of these timepieces, even including the word 'Glashütte' on their pieces to increase sales. It wasn't long before genuine watches from Glashütte began adding 'Original' to authenticate their origin; as such, Glashütte Original's name was coined. After the Second World War, in 1951 all Glashütte watchmakers were merged and nationalised under the German reunification under the name Glashütter Uhrenbetrieb GmbH (GUB). However, during the 1990s, this was privatised, and as such, Glashütte Original became the singular successor to these post World War Two enterprises.
The Pano series of watches for Glashütte Original was launched in 2001. Despite its close design comparison to the Lange 1 by A.Lange & Söhne, it has taken on its own personality over the years. A complication rich series, the Pano collection includes many pieces such as the PanoGraph, PanoReserve, PanoMatic, PanoLunarTourbillon, and the PanoMaticLunar. The latter of those models is, in fact, the largest sub-range in the Pano series, with its name denoting its automatic movement and moonphase.
The Watch
In 2019 a special edition of the PanoMaticLunar was released, the PanoMaticLunar Salmon Opaline. Limited to 50 pieces and only available through boutiques, this soothing warm piece mixes its salmon dial with blue accents and a stainless steel case. Measuring a contemporary 40mm in width, with a thickness of 12.7mm, the brushed and polished case is complemented by strongly curved lugs which gently aid wearability and comfort. With a stepped design to the bezel and case, there is a restrained appeal to the exterior of this piece, as it seemingly understands this Glashütte Original is all about the dial.
From the avant-garde placement of its complication to the romantic and gentle pink tone, the dial of this Glashütte Original possesses elegance in every facet of its display. The salmon dial is a galvanised rose opaline colour that produces unique reflections thanks to its metallic surface. To contrast and complement, raised blued petite batons surround the concentric circles of the hours and minutes dial. The alpha style hands are filled with luminescence and similarly are finished in blue, along with the needle style seconds hand sitting in its own sub-register. The theme of blue doesn't end there, as all the typefaces from the brand signature to 'Made in Germany' carry the same tone of blue. Where two would sit on a traditional dial, in the PanoMatic Lunar's case, the distinct moonphase complication appears, complete with a stepped surround and scale for the lunar month. This deeply set moonphase mirrors the depth found on the two large date discs making up the date aperture at the four o'clock position. The re-occurring theme of blue continues with said date thanks to its blue window, with contrasting white font for legibility.
With a full range of depth from its raised markers, concentric circled registers, moonphase, and date aperture, the PanoMaticLunar Salmon Opaline has a unique personality, with refinement being a continuous theme throughout.
The Movement
Powering this boutique edition of the PanoMaticLunar is the Calibre 90.02 by Glashütte Original. This typically Saxonian executed movement is equipped with many characterful features, including its ¾ bridge with striping, off-centre 21k gold skeletonised rotor, and its iconic and finely hand-engraved duplex swan-neck regulator. Capable of 42 hours of autonomy vibrating at 28,800 vph, this stunning movement is a sight to behold.
How It Wears
The width of this PanoMaticLunar Salmon creates quite a noticeable wrist presence, further emphasised by its slimline bezel and brightness of the dial. However, its slenderness is impressive, measuring just 12.7mm. The result is a piece that is a fantastic, unique option for regular wear with everything one may need from their watch during the day. However, what greatly appeals is how wonderfully the salmon dial colour interacts with the blue details throughout. The dial perfectly dissects smart and casual depending on its surroundings, and its individual style is undeniable—a modern-day classic in the making.
