The Watch

In 2011, Jaeger-LeCoultre marked the 80th anniversary of the Reverso in style, unveiling a carefully chosen lineup of commemorative models. Among them was the striking Grande Reverso Ultra Thin 1931 US Edition. True to its name, this special edition offered a slimmer profile than the standard Reverso and was limited to only 200 pieces.

The watch exudes refinement with its black dial accented by elongated, pointed indices filled with a warm, aged lume. The syringe-style hands—also lume-filled—add an unexpected touch of charm, setting this edition apart from others.

Classic design codes continue with a railroad minute track encircling the dial, providing a balanced and traditional frame. In line with the Reverso’s “less is more” ethos, the dial remains understated, bearing only the discreet ‘Reverso’ inscription, directly inspired by the original 1930s references.

What makes this piece particularly notable is its initial exclusivity to the US market. Since its debut, collectors have held it in especially high regard for its faithful tribute to the earliest Reverso designs and its perfectly judged proportions.

The Movement

Inside, the watch is powered by Jaeger-LeCoultre’s in-house caliber 822. A hand-wound movement, it offers a 45-hour power reserve and beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour. Slim, reliable, and elegant, it is ideally suited to the restrained sophistication of the Ultra Thin Reverso.

On the Wrist

At 46mm by 27mm and only 7.4mm thick, this Ultra Thin model wears beautifully. Its carefully considered dimensions ensure comfort across a wide range of wrist sizes. Though unmistakably a dress watch, its versatile proportions and understated aesthetic make it equally at home in more casual settings.

Condition & Set

The watch is presented in outstanding condition, showing only minimal signs of wear. It comes as a complete set, including both outer and inner boxes, warranty papers, manual, two original Casa Fagliano straps (in black and brown), an original Jaeger-LeCoultre alligator strap, and the original steel JLC pin buckle.

Origin

Jaeger-LeCoultre stands as one of the great names in watchmaking, with the Reverso being its most celebrated creation. The brand traces its roots back to 1833, when Antoine LeCoultre—a gifted watchmaker and mechanical innovator—founded his workshop in Switzerland. Just over a decade later, he developed the millionometer, the first instrument capable of measuring to the micron, enabling unprecedented precision in movement production. Three years after that, he introduced a keyless winding system, further establishing the brand’s reputation for technical ingenuity.

Operating under the name LeCoultre & Cie, the company went on to create more than 350 calibers, including grand complications for prestigious names such as Patek Philippe over a span of three decades. By the turn of the 20th century, LeCoultre was a dominant force in horology. Around this time, Edmond Jaeger—supplier of movements to Cartier—partnered with LeCoultre, a collaboration that eventually formalized into Jaeger-LeCoultre as it is known today.

The maison’s reputation is inseparably tied to its mastery of movements. Over the years, it has developed more than 1,200 calibers and supplied some of the most revered watchmakers—Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Vacheron Constantin among them. This legacy of innovation has earned Jaeger-LeCoultre the enduring nickname: “The Watchmaker’s Watchmaker.”

In 1931, the house introduced the Reverso, a model that would become its defining icon. Legend holds that it was created for British officers in India who sought a watch rugged enough to withstand polo matches. Ingeniously, its central case could be slid out, flipped over to protect the crystal, and locked back into place—shielding the dial from potential damage. With its Art Deco geometry paired with elegance and subtle sportiness, the Reverso quickly became a design triumph.

Over the decades, the Reverso has evolved into countless variations—ranging in size, material, and complication. From chronographs and moon phases to minute repeaters and flying tourbillons, the line has embraced both artistry and technical prowess. Most recently, in 2021, Jaeger-LeCoultre unveiled its most complex Reverso ever, boasting no fewer than 11 complications.
